Green Island, NY – MakerShed.com – the official webstore of the Maker movement – now features Ecovative’s GIY (Grow It Yourself) materials, used by curious designers, educators, students, and other innovators to make environmentally friendly, healthy, sustainable designs and products.
The GIY Mushroom® Material kits were selected to be showcased at the 2016 Bay Area MakerFaire on May 21 in San Francisco, in a hands on demonstration by Ecovative’s lead designer Jeff Betts.
Ecovative is a leading biomaterials company growing high performance, premium, award-wining products—including MycoBoard™ panels for furniture and construction, MycoFoam™ packaging materials, and other consumer goods—that are healthy, environmentally friendly, and certified sustainable. Ecovative products enable its customers to meet their design, production, and delivery needs and to achieve their sustainability goals.
“Ecovative’s goal is to replace toxic, unhealthy, non-compostable materials with safer, sustainable products. The decision by leaders of the Maker movement to feature Ecovative’s GIY kits on MakerShed.com encourages Makers and others to experiment with this new green technology, bringing project and product ideas to life using Mushroom® Materials” said Eben Bayer, CEO and Co-Founder of Ecovative.
Makers are a growing community who bring a DIY (do it yourself) mindset to technology. The worldwide Maker Movement, which is transforming innovation, culture and education, is connected via MakeMedia, host of MakerShed.com, headquartered in San Francisco.
“Whether as hobbyists or professionals, entrepreneurs or educators, makers are creative, resourceful and curious, developing projects that demonstrate how they can interact with the world around them. Ecovative’s GIY kits offer an entire new material to work with; as a teaching tool or building block for new ideas. We are excited to see what grows out of this new product offering,” said Audrey Donaldson, Senior Buyer, MakerShed.
The GIY kits contain a bag of Ecovative’s special mixture of Mushroom® Material composed of non-food agriculture waste and mycelium (mushroom roots). GIY’ers follow the directions, in three steps: Step One: Rehydrate, and let it grow for 3 or 4 days. Step Two: Select a form (or design your own), fill it, then watch it grow to shape in 3 to 4 more days. Step Three: Take a photo of the GIY Mushroom Material Earth-friendly creation and share it with the Maker community and on Ecovative’s GIY community forum.
GIY kits, refill, and collaboration sets (for groups and educators) are being sold via MakerShed.com. Makerspaces, educators, scout leaders, and others planning projects should keep in mind that the kits must be used within 10 weeks of delivery. Details on the GIY products, cost, and options to order can be found on MakerShed.com. Ecovative’s GIY materials will continue to be available via the Ecovative webstore.
