GIY Maker Spotlight: Alex Dorr

GIY Maker Spotlight: Alex Dorr

Q: What first sparked your interest in the realm of mycology?

A: After reading some inspiring books including Food of The Gods by Terence Mckenna and Mycelium Running by Paul Stamets it catapulted me into the woods to commune and to cultivate these mystical beings. I realized at that point that there was a whole universe of discovery at my fingertips. Mushrooms seemed to me like the answer to all life's greatest problems. Food, Medicine, Shelter, Connection, Healing, Remediation, and so much more! From that point forward I signed the contract so to speak and there was no looking back.

Q: What exactly are you researching/working on?

A: I have always been fascinated with growing mushrooms and been in the commercial gourmet and medicinal mushroom industry for over 4 years. I started researching and heavily diving into the field of mycoremediation which is using fungi to clean up and/or filter toxic waste. This sparked me into writing a book called “Mycoremediation Handbook: A Grassroots Guide to Growing Mushrooms and Cleaning Up Toxic Waste with Fungi.”

Through doing this research I wanted to weave in my communities more and make them feel like they could physically help in the goal of “healing with mushrooms” no matter their background. This led me to launch the company “Mushroom Revival” which specializes in making medicinal mushroom centered value added products and is one of the countries first commercial Cordyceps militaris growers. Every product sold plants one tree around the world. We are researching and working on the best ways to grow, extract and give people the most potent mushroom medicine in the world and at the same time they are healing their mind body and soul, they are healing the planet as well to provide a healthy earth for Seven Generations Ahead.

Q: What is the purpose of your research/work?

A: The purpose of my research and work is to provide the most potent Mushroom focused Medicine to the masses all while giving back and providing Medicine to the planet. We have realized far too many medicinal mushroom products in the US are watered down and are too overpriced for the medicine people are getting. Our mission is to provide the highest quality medicine in the US and in the World. We want our company to leave a bigger impact than just the human centered individual. This is exactly why we plant trees to give thanks for this earth that is so graciously providing HOME for us humans to live.

Q: What do you like most about working with mushrooms/mycelium?

A: I love working with fungi because they are the humble movers and shakers, janitors and caretakers, connectors, and nurturers, shamans and doctors, farm to table owners, innovators, evolutionaries, and visionary stewards of this planet. They are so alien but yet we share over 50% of our DNA with them. They are so mysterious that even after 100 lifetimes of endless study they will always beautifully evade our mere basic understanding. They can do almost anything and provide almost any niche we need. They can save the human race 100 times over, yet still stay in the shadows as a humble elder. We know nothing about them, but they know everything about us. Every moment with fungi is a grand discovery waiting to be uncovered.
